ajedrecistas españoles e italianos (estos últimos, en buena parte, de
territorios bajo dominación española).
Nuestro juego adquiere un enorme prestigio en las cortes y recibe el
mecenazgo de reyes y grandes señores, entre ellos papas, que ven en él
no sólo belleza e inteligencia, sino también una forma de aumentar su
fama, cuando los ajedrecistas que protegían vencían
a los de otros grandes señores. El ajedrez empieza a convertirse en un
medio de vida y, bajo el patronazgo de los reyes de España, se
organizan los primeros grandes torneos. Incluso Felipe II aprovecha la
afición al ajedrez de algunos dignatarios de los
que quiere obtener información, para enviar como espía a Ruy López.”
