La
tagua, también conocida como nuez de marfil o marfil vegetal, es la
semilla de la palma Phytelephas macrocarpa, que crece en los bosques
húmedos tropicales de la región del
Pacífico, especialmente en Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. Es de las
pocas palmeras que guardan agua en el subsuelo, hasta por 50 años.
Se
utiliza y se comercializa internacionalmente, principalmente para hacer
botones y también figuras artísticas o decorativas y adornos.

Tagua,
also known as ivory nut or vegetable ivory, is the seed of the palm
Phytelephas macrocarpa, which grows in the tropical moist forests of the
Pacific region, especially
in Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. It is one of the few palm trees
that keep water in the subsoil, for up to 50 years.
It is used and marketed internationally, mainly to make buttons and also artistic or decorative figures and ornaments.
